There were lots of reasons for Shannon Felder's Donoho girls to celebrate Saturday night.
Their 49-28 win over visiting Talladega County Central in the championship game of the Class 1A, Area 8 tournament gave the Falcons an area tournament title for the first time since 2006.
Donoho (20-5) posted its first 20-win season since 1995. The win avenged a 49-40 loss to TCC the last time the two met a month ago. Most importantly, it kept the Falcons at home in sub-region play Thursday. Donoho will host Loachapoka, while TCC travels to Camp Hill to play Area 7 champion Edward Bell. Edward Bell defeated Loachapoka 53-48.
"Both teams typically start off trying to get a feel for the other team. The third quarter has been the difference maker," Felder said. "At halftime tonight, we tried to emphasize that we won the war on the boards in the first half."
The Falcons led 15-14 on the boards at the half without much help from center Frances Barber, who picked up two fouls in the first 90 seconds of the game and spent most of the first half on the bench.
In the third quarter, TCC got no put-backs from offensive rebounds and managed only three points. The Falcons extended their lead to a more comfortable 32-21, holding the Tigers scoreless for the final five minutes.
TCC cut Donoho's lead to nine points just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter when Robin Swain scored from the paint, but that was as close as the Tigers got. The Falcons put together a 14-2 run over the next six minutes.
Tournament MVP Cameron McMillan grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to start the run. Kelsy Crawford converted a steal into a layup, then fed Barber low for another layup. The Falcons scored their next eight points at the free throw line. McMillan, Crawford, Jherica May and Maggie Morgan all contributed at the stripe.
"Rebounding," was McMillan's one-word response when asked the difference in last night's win and the earlier loss to the Tigers. "We stepped it up on rebounding and on defense."
McMillan had a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds. She was 10 of 12 on free throws.
Reserve Kendra Crawford, a seventh-grader, was the only other Falcon to score in double figures with 10 points.
Joining McMillan on the all-tournament team were Barber, May and Kelsy Crawford of Donoho; Swain, Embry and Kiara Calhoun of TCC; Chelsea Robinson and Bobbie Gray of Faith Christian; Shelby King and Shay Huntley of Fayetteville; Jasmine Smith of Alabama School for the Deaf and Jasmine Richardson of Winterboro.

We host sub regionals at home and play on Thursday. If we win Thursday, we go to regionals in Montgomery. Mikayla also won yesterday, and her big tournament is coming up next weekend.
